At Prizant Dermatology in Pittsburgh, PA, we are passionate about providing each of our clients with effective, safe solutions to their cosmetic concerns. We understand that surgery is not appropriate for everyone, so we proudly offer many non-invasive cosmetic treatments, including dermal fillers. Today, we’re answering some of the most commonly asked questions about this type of treatment, including where it can be administered. Let’s get started.
What Areas of the Face Do Fillers Work Best On?
Fillers work best on the regions of the face experiencing moderate or severe volume loss. This type of treatment is often used to restore lost volume to the cheeks, recontour the cheekbones, and create a more youthful contour. It also is commonly used to erase fine lines around the mouth, enhance the borders of the lips, and volumize the lips.
Another place often targeted for treatment with fillers is the nasolabial folds that run between your mouth and nose. However, you also may be a good filler candidate if you are concerned about the appearance of your temples, jawline, or chin.
Which Dermal Filler Is Right for Me?
Depending on your concerns, you may be a good candidate for one specific filler, or you may need several different injectables to achieve your desired results.
If you are concerned about your cheeks, under-eye area, jowls, or a poorly defined jawline, VOLUMA or Sculptra injections may be a great option. If you want to enhance the appearance of your mouth and lips, JUVÉDERM may be the right injectable dermal filler for you. It is typically used to treat nasolabial folds, but it is an effective way to eliminate other lines around the mouth, too.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Filler Injections?
Many factors must be considered before we can say you are a good candidate for dermal filler injections. It is extremely important to us that you are satisfied with your results, so one of the biggest things we look at is the cause of your cosmetic concerns. You will be a poor filler candidate if you have dynamic wrinkles, but you may be an ideal candidate if you have volume loss-related cosmetic concerns.
We also must carefully consider your health before we can say you are a good candidate. While dermal filler injections are safe for most adults, there are contraindications, including pregnancy and nursing. During your consultation, your health history and current health will be discussed. We will also talk about your habits and what drugs and supplements you currently take.
Who Shouldn’t Consider This Type of Treatment?
Dermal filler injections are not suitable for you if you have problems with your blood clotting, or with uncontrolled diabetes. You also will not be able to get treatment if your targeted area is infected at the time of your appointment. If you have a history of herpes outbreaks, you should use preventative medication before your treatment.
What I Have Dynamic Wrinkles?
If you have dynamic wrinkles, we have a solution for you. We offer three of the best neuromodulators on the market, BOTOX, XEOMIN, and Jeaveau. These injectables can correct a wide variety of problems, including frown lines, forehead folds, crow’s feet, and nasolabial folds caused by muscle overuse.
Is There Any Preparation Required Before Dermal Filler Injections?
Preparation steps are required before you can get your dermal filler treatment. We will give you a complete list of rules to follow during your initial consultation, and we’ll also let you know everything you need to do after your injections are administered. One vital rule to follow is to not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before your treatment. It is also essential that you do not consume any blood-thinning drugs or supplements for at least one week.
Furthermore, it is important that you mitigate the risk of sunburn for a couple of weeks before your appointment. You should watch the local UV index closely and limit your time outdoors when radiation levels are high. Generally, it is a good idea to stay indoors during the middle of the day. If you can’t stay indoors, you should wear sunscreen that protects against all UV rays and reapply it at least every four hours.
What Aftercare Guidelines Will I Need Ro Follow?
After your dermal filler injections have been administered, you need to avoid touching the treated areas for several hours. Ideally, you should wait at least 24 hours to apply makeup. Additionally, you should avoid using any skincare products that may cause irritation for at least a day after your treatment.
Another important rule to follow is to avoid strenuous activity for a day or two after your injection session. Moreover, you must avoid excessive heat exposure and sleep with your head elevated above your heart on the night of your appointment.
How Long Will the Results of My Dermal Filler Injections Last?
The results of dermal filler injections can last anywhere from several months to several years depending on the filler, your lifestyle, your metabolism, and other factors. If you get Sculptra injections, for example, you may be able to enjoy your desired results for two to five years. On the other hand, if you get VOLUMA injections, your optimal results may fade after a couple of years, as the formula is different.
How Can I Extend the Longevity of My Results?
To maximize the longevity of your results, do not smoke or consume any other tobacco products. Such products contain harmful chemicals and wreak havoc on the collagen that helps keep your skin healthy and youthful. Also, you need to eat nutritiously, stay hydrated, and keep your skin moisturized.
Discover How You Can Restore Your Youthful Contours
