How Long Will Restylane Last?

The Restylane brand comprises several different formulations of dermal fillers that can beautifully restore facial volume and symmetry, as well as plump up wrinkles, in a single visit. If you are new to injectable fillers, you are probably wondering how long these incredible results might last. At Prizant Dermatology in Pittsburgh, PA, we find that dermal fillers can be very long-lasting in many patients, although results may vary.

How Long Will Restylane Last?

What patients love about using the group of fillers under the “Restylane” umbrella is that they produce immediate anti-aging results that can be very long-lasting. A patient’s more youthful appearance following treatment can last for up to one year, sometimes even longer, but there is no guarantee that your results will last this long. A filler’s lifespan can vary depending on how quickly a patient metabolizes the product, so you may find that you need a touch-up sooner.

Knowing How To Space Out Treatments

While it is possible that results will last up to a year, fillers can wear off sooner than this. Generally, fillers can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. When you start to notice a return of wrinkles or sagging, it is probably time to schedule your next appointment. You do not need to wait until the filler has completely dissipated – touch-up appointments can help you maintain your youthful appearance and address any new areas that may be causing you concern.

Once you are in a routine with your treatment sessions, you will get a sense of how quickly your body tends to metabolize the product. If you know that your fillers usually last about 10 months, it makes sense to schedule your next appointment around the 8-to-9-month mark to maintain your results. Do not worry about “over-filling” — a skilled injector will know exactly how much product to add to maintain an ideal result.

Do Some Fillers Last Longer Than Others?

There are different formulations of Restylane to choose from, depending on what part of the face is being treated, and yes some formulations do tend to last longer than others. Lyft has a thicker consistency that is appropriate for deeper wrinkles and which is sometimes also used to restore volume in the cheeks. Silk is a lighter formulation that is ideal for creating a more subtle effect around the lips and mouth.

While a thicker formulation might theoretically last longer, it is important to choose the type of filler based on its function and where it will be used, as opposed to how long it will last. Your injector will always pick the best type of filler to meet your specific needs.

How To Make Restylane Last Longer

All dermal fillers dissipate eventually but there are certain things you can do to extend the results of your injectables. When some basic care is taken, you can keep your fillers from fading any sooner than they need to.

Use Special Care With Your Face for 24 hours

How you treat your face for the first day following treatment can play a big part in how long your results will last. For the first 24 hours post-treatment, it is a good idea to avoid putting any pressure on your treatment site. This means that you shouldn’t scrub your face, make exaggerated facial expressions, or sleep on your stomach. You want the product to have time to fully “set” and having your face pushed into a pillow can disrupt this process.

Avoiding intense physical activity for the first day post-treatment is also a good idea. While normal activity is fine, the idea is to be reasonably careful so that your face can rest. By day two, you can make a full return to your typical beauty and exercise routine.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is not only good for your skin as a whole, it can also help to extend the life of your injectables. When it comes to your skin, you must stay hydrated both from within and without. This means using a high-quality moisturizer and serum to keep your skin supple. Well hydrated skin does seem to maintain the full effect of injectable treatments longer. Ask your injector for recommendations about the best hydrating products to use on your face.

Limit Stress

Stress is impossible to avoid entirely, but the higher your stress level, the more likely it is that it will show on your face. Practice relaxation techniques to keep yourself from frowning, grimacing, or clenching your jaw. If you have a hard time controlling your facial movements, Botox can be very helpful. It is fine to have a Botox treatment at the same time as your filler injections.

Avoid Direct Sun Exposure

Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen is a good idea for everyone but it is an absolute must if you partake in injectable treatments. A hat is also a great idea if you’ll be outdoors for a long time. UV light penetrating into the dermis can contribute to the breakdown of fillers. If you’d like to have a tan, there are many great topical tanning products that can protect and moisturize your skin while giving it a healthy glow.

Watch What You Eat

We know that diet directly affects the skin but in the case of fillers, a diet that is high in sugar and salt can cause inflammation that may impact how quickly your fillers break down. Anything that causes inflammation in the body, whether it is processed foods or alcohol, can increase the likelihood that your fillers will fade faster than they would otherwise. Whether you have fillers or not, your skin will always thank you for a healthy lifestyle.

What About Exercise?

We certainly don’t recommend that anyone stop their exercise routine, but it does seem that people who exercise very intensely (for example, long-distance runners) tend to go through their fillers sooner. It is thought that intense exercise may contribute to the faster metabolization of the product. There is no need to give up your runs but be aware that you might require more frequent filler touch-ups.

Choosing an Experienced Injector

What really matters more than anything else when it comes to achieving positive, long-lasting results with fillers is to work with an injector who really knows what they are doing. Getting your dose just right and injecting it into the precise location to get the perfect result will ensure that you can enjoy a great outcome for many months.

A skilled injector will also be able to advise you on the best product to address your specific concerns. For example, plumping up the wrinkles on the back on the hands may require a different formulation of Restylane than what we would recommend for the lips. It is so important to find a knowledgeable injector you can trust and who understands the full product line with its various applications.

Are Dermal Fillers Worth It?

Even if your filler wears off more quickly than you had hoped, the benefits by far outweigh the need to schedule a touch-up appointment a couple of times per year. Restylane can address numerous aging and symmetry concerns that would otherwise require surgery, and the best part is, it can be done on your lunch break with absolutely no recovery required.

Zero Downtime

The process of injecting dermal fillers under the skin is painless and produces immediate results without any swelling or scarring. This is why so many people are turning to fillers as an alternative to costly surgical procedures that can take weeks to fully recover from. In a matter of minutes, injectables can restore a more youthful look and you can immediately return to your life.

A Multi-Purpose Solution

Restylane has a solution for many of the aesthetic concerns you may have. Depending on the type of formulation used, it can:

  • Plump up marionette lines
  • Smooth crow’s feet
  • Restore facial volume and symmetry
  • Fill out the lips
  • Augment the cheekbones
  • Enhance other parts of the body such as the hands
